Directional & Horizontal Drilling

Directional drilling is the technique of drilling a wellbore along a planned trajectory that is not vertical. It allows operators to reach target zones that are not directly beneath the surface location, often to avoid obstacles or tap into multiple reservoirs from a single site.

Horizontal drilling is a type of directional drilling where the wellbore is turned horizontally within the target formation, greatly increasing contact with the reservoir and enhancing production.

🛠️ Key Responsibilities

  • Access multiple zones from one surface location
  • Maximize reservoir exposure and hydrocarbon recovery
  • Reduce environmental footprint and surface disturbance
  • Enable complex well designs like sidetracks, multilaterals, and pad drilling

⚙️ Applications

  • Unconventional reservoirs (e.g., shale, tight sands)
  • Extended reach drilling (ERD)
  • Relief wells or bypass operations
