Multistage Horizontal Stimulation

Multistage horizontal stimulation is a key technique in the development of unconventional oil and gas reservoirs, such as shale and tight formations. It involves dividing a horizontal wellbore into multiple isolated sections (or “stages”) and stimulating each individually using hydraulic fracturing to maximize contact with the reservoir.

🛠️ How It Works

  • The horizontal section is segmented using plugs, packers, or ball-activated sleeves.
  • Each stage is sequentially stimulated using high-pressure fluid and proppant to create and hold open fractures.
  • Common methods include plug-and-perf and sliding sleeve systems.
